Its been itching away me for a while now, ebbing and flowing but always there, this strange longing.
The desire to get away and to explore, but to do so quietly and slowly, yet still comfortably. Away from the busy and the crowded and the peopley places. I keep eyeing B roads and unclassified roads on the map, the sort of roads where 30 mph is as fast as you safely want to go and that's pushing it. I'm in absolutely no rush and got not destination in mind, I'm happy to pull in to every passing place and let you go by.
I'm scrolling through micro campers online, wondering how viable it is. The fantasy of it is sustaining right now, imagining how the days would go, the places I would visit and the whole time I'm thinking about the quiet places, not the tourist spots. A lonely lay by in the middle of nowhere sounds an ideal place to visit. So what if its only 3 miles away from the last place I stopped, I want to stop again. That's the sort of pace I'm talking about.
I want to thread between hedges on roads with blind bends that suddenly open out into unexpected views, pottering along and listening to audiobooks or LoFi. I want to stop and get comfortable in the back of the camper and just appreciate it all, while switching to reading some of the ridiculous amount of unread books I have on my ereader. No rush, no destination, nowhere to be but here, no plan but to be away from where the noise and traffic is. No goal to achieve other than being and experiencing.
I keep wondering, could I afford it? Could I save for it somehow? All the microcamper prices seem unattainable right now, then there's the cost of running it and the big fact that my practical responsibilities do make it entirely a fantasy.
Its such a small fantasy though, simple, no complexity. It doesn't need a lot, its just more than I actually have or can give, because I'm giving of myself elsewhere, because I don't have what it takes to afford it.
There's the maps though and there's the microcamper van listings to scroll through, swiping through the photos, thinking how I could make that space work for me. There's the possibility and the fantasy. There's ambience videos and van lifer videos and there's street view. There's the quiet of the garden or the woods.
Still, it continues to itch all the same.
